The superintendent standard
The standard came first. The business came after.
Ken spent more than three decades in the carpenters union, and for most of those years he wasn't just swinging a hammer. He was the superintendent, responsible for every trade on the site, every schedule, and every detail that had to pass inspection.
Do that for thirty years and the standard stops being a work thing. It's just how you see. A door that rubs, a rail with play in it, a caulk line wandering off course: he can't not notice.
These days he'd rather work for homeowners than general contractors. The projects are smaller. The standard isn't.
